My 10-day family vacation finally came to an end late Sunday night (technically it was really early Monday morning), and not a moment too soon. It's extra difficult for me to eat correctly when I'm on vacation, but usually it doesn't add up to be a big problem because we don't go on long trips. But 10 days really saw me plow through a lot of crap.
Fortunately, thanks to all my running, I appear to have minimized the damage weightwise. Strengthwise is a different story - even though I brought the 30 Day Shred with me, I only did it once or twice early on in the trip. As I went to bed Monday morning I vowed to make up for the week away from the Shred by doing it when I woke up.
That didn't happen (hello, 3 hour time difference), but I did do it when the kids went down for naps. It sucked - even Anita seemed to be mocking me. Everything felt fat, even my knees. I was pretty wiped out when Jillian said that "we're all in the same boat together." Really? Only if your boat* has a pound of saltwater taffy, a few boxes of Weight Watchers cookies, and several nights of pizza/mexican food/desserts.
Of course, she's right. Even though her boat may have less ballast, we're still both exercising. And even though exercise may be less painful when you're in better shape, it's still all about pushing yourself. Now all I have to do is get back on track so my boat will shrink back down to what it was before I went on vacation. When I finished sweating, I went down and wrote down everything I'd eaten so far. And although this morning's run was skipped due to an unfortunate alarm problem (my wife is late for work and is just thrilled about that), I'm working to get back to my regular schedule and that's all I can do.
For all the runners out there, EmmieJ is looking for a 10K in August - are you up for it? And there's talk of a 1/2 marathon at some point, too! It's a long distance, but I'm going to push myself to get there!
*And by "boat" I mean "butt."

We may all be exercising together, but Jillian is allowed to walk around and talk while we have to keep going!!

The idea of a 10k in August is a great plan. I have signed up for one on August 15th (for anyone in Toronto there is a 10k on Centre Island for women if the strike is over and we can get there).
I have also signed up for a half marathon on Sept 27th in Toronto. For me, the only way for me to stay motivated is to sign up for the races. One benefit to signing up for the half marathon was a login to a training site that provides weekly training plans for prep. For me it was really helpful to make sure I was on track and also give me some insight into what "race ready" was supposed to mean endurance wise.

I'm exploring the idea of discipline in my blog right now...
I suspect there is a give and take that makes it effective but not repressive. And from the sound of things... you rock the Casbah!
How easy would it have been in the past to just give up and figure you'd blown it too badly to bother?
Somehow we've learned to dive within - to trust ourselves and do the right thing for our bodies. It's amazing.
