I was blessed with a child who **NEVER** spit up. That said, when I looked at this product I found myself thinking that it would be great if you could tie it onto the child like a bib and then drape it over your shoulder. Then again, I never did develop the skills/coordination needed to wrangle a burp cloth because I didn't get the practice.
