I admit that my daughter isn't really picky when it comes to cool new stuff. As long as it's for her, it could be a popsicle stick and a bag of cotton balls. She just doesn't really care.
I think it's called being a kid.
But there are a few things that hold her attention longer than box filler -- Dora DVDs, coloring books, ice cream (tough to beat), and the School Zone Activity Cards.
Yes. They are for babies -- like 6-9 months, but apparently she doesn't discriminate. The ACLU would be so proud!
Basically, I think of these as board books without the book part. The cards are bright, colorful, and engaging, and for older kids, they can set them up to play a little game (put them in a sequence, flip the pictures themselves). I imagine if I had bought them when she was a baby, they would have been a great long term investment.
And seriously, all kids love the peek-a-boo. It's like baby crack of the very good kind. My daughter can seriously sit for hours and giggle away everytime she lifts the flap for the animal to come out.
They're a great alternative to the neverending flow of board books, and they're a great sibling gift. Give 'em to the older sibling and when s/he are tired of them, they can easily be passed down. More bang for the buck.
And my favorite part is that my daughter leaves them lying around everywhere -- which does wonders to tick off my mother-in-law.
