I write other places, you know, or maybe you don't, but I'm going to take a moment to remind you. Politely of course.
At the Pioneer Woman Homeschooling, I had the great pleasure of interviewing a couple of my favorite bloggers, Molly from Mommy Coddle and Asha from Parent Hacks. You probably already know this because I've determined that everyone in the world reads Ree's blog.
You'll also find a couple of new Mominatrix columns, where I offer some very special spring cleaning tips and then have a more serious discussion about libido and anti-depressants, which I will be discussing on my sexy radio show.
You can join me for a little Naptime Nookie (catchy, huh), today at 2pm EST. It's mostly kosher (no bad language or anything you wouldn't hear on Oprah). Promise.
If you've taken (or are taking) anti-depressants, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Save two people who said they actually made their sex life better, most moms emailed or tweeted me to say basically "Oh my God me too!"
You can listen to the show but also join in by calling and/or chatting.
And if you want to leave your thoughts here (or over at my column) if you can't make it, feel free.

I agree with your point of view

Was on Welbutrin for about 6 months - no effect in that department, all as good as ever. :)

I've been on Prozac for about 6 weeks now and my sex drive has taken a hit. BUT, I don't see it as a huge problem.
I used to use sex the same way I would use food-to self-medicate. And I'd get irrationally upset when my husband wasn't in the mood (we have 3 children under the age of 5, money is very tight, and he works 12 hour days-the man has the right to be tired and stressed out).
I can see where this may be a problem down the line but right now I'm just happy my anxiety is under control. And that I can fully function without feeling like I'm utterly overwhelmed.
I'm on an SSRI for anxiety, though I've used the same medication in the past for major depression. It seems as I've gotten older and had childen my depression manifests differently. And, anxiety and depression often go hand in hand anyway and the medications used are very often the same.
If this low sex drive thing continues and it becomes a problem between my husband and I or starts to bother me, I'll talk to my doctor. I might look into the amino acids though-that seems interesting!

Hi friend! I have been very bad about blog reading through everything lately but bookmarking this to check out your other places I didn't know about. Always interested in hearing what you're up to! xo!

Oh hey, and someone else said that about Wellbutrin! I think the thing is that SSRIs do help a lot of people, so doctors go for them first. It was only when SSRIs didn't help my depression at all (but did help me gain a total of 110 (!) lbs) that my doctor tried something non-SSRI, instead of messing with dosages and such. Thank god.

When I was on SSRIs, my libido took a serious hit. (It did when I was married to the wrong guy too. How about that?!) The SSRIs didn't fix my depression or my libido.
When I went on Wellbutrin, it jumped back up to "normal" for me. I know "normal" is different for everyone. It was actually higher for a few months. I'm happy (in all ways) with my Wellbutrin!

My AD's didn't mess with my libido but they did with my ability to orgasm. My psychopharmacologist recommended I start taking a daily supplement of L-arginine/L-ornithine (both amino acids) in combination and it made a big difference for me.
You generally have to go to a health-food store to find these--they aren't sold at the supermarket in the vitamin section--and they aren't cheap (around $30 for a month's supply) but if those barriers can be overcome I recommend it as a worthwhile experiment of the "can't hurt, might help" variety.

Since I started taking Cymbalta my orgasms are more complicated than Calculus.

I'm one of those rare moms for whom the AD's made things better. Initially my drive took a hit, but I got great advice from my doctor: "Sometimes you just have to, um, do it anyway." So, I did, and found that over time, that downturn of sex drive really reversed itself. Getting motivated to start doing the 'grown up' was the tough part. I just had to uh, take one for the team, if you will.
I've been on AD's for several years now, and I have a normal sex drive (for me.)
