And This is Where I Profess My Love for David Letterman

Daveletterman_1Sadly, I haven't watched Dave in a very very long time. The bed usually calls my name way earlier than he's ever on (even though we're in CST and so he's on an hour earlier). However, I caught him on Friday night - and boy was I glad that I did.

Sure, Jen Garner was yummy and cute, particularly doing her lovely West Virginia southern accent. But, really, what got me wild for more Dave, was his interview with Mary Cheney. You know, Dick Cheney's gay daughter who just wrote a book about being Dick Cheney's gay daughter?

For the first 22 seconds, Dave asked her nice questions like "How does it feel to have written this book" (bla) and "What's it like to have worked with your dad?" (doublebla). But then, he turned up the heat and badgered her for the next 12 minutes (not including a commercial break). Sweet.

It was like playing how many ways can you ask the same question because she is not giving you a Marycheney_1 straight (ahem - no pun intended) answer. And if you haven't figured out what it was about, then take a big old fat guess. Could it be that we haven't heard jack-shit from her about gay rights until now, in her book...

Granted, she fended him off pretty well with one-word answers and no affect (kind of scary), but finally, it got pretty tough. He was kind of like a rabid dog, with a nice suit and a funny laugh. And I'm glad. Because I think it's the question that everyone wanted to know.

"Dude. You had an IN at the white house - your dad is vice president - where the fuck have you been?"

Now, she had good reasons - the war, her role as a staffer with little influence, and um, large amounts of money and bribes to shut up (okay, I added that one in). I mean, I wonder how the gay community feels about her. Dave even asked her - and while she wouldn't generalize, I'd be pretty annoyed. I admit to totally forgetting about Dick Cheney's gay daughter - and now that I'm reminded of her, I'm kind of pissed off. How are your personal and the rights of millions of other Americans not important enough to bug the shit out of your dad and make some freaking noise?

I had to chuckle, however, because Dick Cheney is reasonably useless and maybe she figured that out. But even so, I'd probably still be all up in his grill about the whole thing. At least out of a sense of duty.

So, while some people think Dave has dropped off the face of the earth, I disagree. And in fact, I love the new more bitter, more cynical Dave. And while it may be funny to listen to quirky headlines, weird ebay items, and idiot Americans answer stupid questions, I still think it's great to see someone not kiss the ass of every "celebrity" that comes their way and ask the questions that people are curious about.

So, Dave, I love you. You'll always be my #1.

OMG, I have a crush on Dave too!!! Never in my life has anyone ever admitted it or agreed when I brought it up. Go figure.

He's a sexy, intelligent, non-ass-kissing, funny motherfucker. I love, love, love him. I love him even more now that he's a Dad and that he is smitten with his son.

When I lived in CT and MA, I drove the Merritt parkway into New York and I'd always look for him. Not that I'd ever be able in a million years to see him..

for anyone interested in seeing the clip who didn't tivo, here ya be:

(you'll have to scroll down a bit.)

Dave may or may not be politically motivated on a regular basis, but he *did* go after the biggest dumbass on tv, Bill O'Falafal. It's also in the crooks and liars archive. Dave really got a few good digs in with that interview, too.

Lastly, if Mary Cheney couldn't stand her dad's politics, did she really have to work for his campaign? I mean, I can almost see the defense for not getting involved with his political stance, b/c after all, it's her dad, etc, but to go totally against her core beliefs and play for the other team in that manner - wa-huh? I think she's made it perfectly clear on which side her bread is buttered.

I've had a crush on Dave Letterman and his big toothy gap since I was wearing pigtails. the man is total fantasy fodder.

I can't stay up that late anymore, but I do like Dave.

Mary has kept a ridiculously low profile. We hear even less about her than we have about Newt's sister.

Yeah! Vice-President or not, how can anyone NOT question a father who promotes an agenda that would marginalize his/her life? Who wouldn't say, "Geez, Dad. Isn't your love for me greater than your love for politics? Or the President?" Thank God that Dave was there to point out the irony of all of this.

I'm also a lifelong Letterman fan, and I am happy to see he's getting some of his bite back.

I was entirely creeped out by how much she looks like her dad. And I couldn't believe Dave kept her on for TWO segments when she was so un-charming and evasive. When he said they'd be back for more with Mary Cheney after the commercial I nearly choked.

I love Dave too. I think fatherhood has done great things for him.

Lets face it. Dave rocks. He invented a new wacky late night, even if his jokes are sometimes flat. Bottom line: you try doing what he does 100 nights a year.

I kinda feel sorry for her. Think about all the daddy issues the rest of us have...now add to that your dad having the power to (and wanting to) take away your personal freedoms and not respecting your lifestyle. Imagine coming out of the closet to your dad, Dick Cheney. That's gotta suck.

I think alot of people forget that Dick Cheney has a gay daughter - she manages to keep very quiet.

Perhaps she's afraid of getting shot by dad?

I had a huge crush on David Letterman between the ages of ten and 12...

I don't think that Mary Cheney had any responsibility to do anything she didn't want to, though. Because she didn't take on the job of vice president. What she chooses to do is her business. I would hate to be pressured to antagonize my father over his beliefs, to be honest, and they are verrrrrrry different from mine, because I love him and he's my dad first, no matter what his politics are. Maybe she feels the same way...

I think there's a cool thing happening with Dave, which is that the older and more comfortable he gets, the less he pulls punches. He's getting a little political and I kind of like it. Leno's never had any qualms about showing his bias, why not Dave?

As for Mary's deal, I think it's about time. Her silence betrays the entire gay community.

I actually saw the Jenn Garner thing, then fell asleep. The best thing about nursing was that I would watch while Emily noshed.

But I did see Chris Matthews grill the shit out of Mary Cheney, and it rocked.

I started watching Letterman in high school and thought it was hilarious but like someone else said, all that "does this float?" and dropping crap off buildings got too stupid for me. And SuperDave Osborne...HATE HIM. Letterman himself is funny as shit. It's the show that blows

As for Mary Cheney, I still haven't figured out what her deal is.

Welcome back.

And Good for Dave!

Oh yes, Mr. Letterman definitely got his groove back. I don't know what happened for awhile there. Too many "Does This Float" skits for my attention span and too much celeb slobbering. But now, he gets all up in their shizzle. Sadly I too go to bed too early most nights. Especially after drinking an entire bottle of wine.

I've never been into older men, but if I were I would love Dave. It's the no-kiss-ass thing but I'm also pretty partial to the gap in the teeth.

I haven't seen Dave in months, but I was sufficiently caffeinated that night to catch his show. He was awesome. Um, okay, Mary, I get that you "didn't have the luxury of being a single issue voter." But once your guys, you know, the ones who were keeping the world safe for democracy, got in, what did you do then?

Oh, and the flat affect was totally freaky. She looked like somebody jumped her in a dark alley and botoxed her within an inch of her life.

Dave IS the best. I so wish I'd seen this.

And yes, I'd love to know what the gay community thinks about this woman who has failed to use her influence AT ALL!

Yeah, that Dave is great isn't he? I love that Michael Moore interview he did when he asked those pointed questions about some of the important details in his movie that have been questioned and plainly debunked by others! He really had Moore stumbling to come up with some answers for those inaccuracies that he put out there! But hey, that's Dave. Always ready to have the nerve to hold a controversial figure responsible for their actions.

Oh wait, never mind, that was just a dream I had.

Sorry.

I still have that one TIVO'd to watch later. Now I can't wait.

Are we sure she's just not gay all of the sudden to sound good for her daddy to try to run next turn? Because until a magazine article last week, I never knew she was gay.

I get where you are going with this and on some levels, yeah, maybe you're right. But at the same time, some people don't think that being gay has to be the big political statement, they just want to live their lives unmolested. She is putting herself out there with a book now, so I think that changes the rules, but who knows what her motivation was? Maybe she saw that it wasn't possible to just go ahead with your life, so now she's speaking out. It could be that she knew she wasn't going to get anywhere with those crazy republican jerks anyhow, so she just went on with her business and kept her job. It could be that years of doing that suddenly made her think twice, so she quit to go write the book. Hell, I'm guessing White House staff are prolly busy, so maybe she just never got around to it before. You see where I'm going with this? People have their reasons.

I was pleased when Howard Stern went on the Letterman show to rail against CBS and the bullshit lawsuit it had concocted against him. I can't help but think it took cojones of steel for Letterman to invite a guest who walked in wearing a t-shirt disparaging Letterman's own boss. They don't make 'em like good ol' Dave anymore.

Ooh, I wish I'd seen this. I haven't seen Dave in ages, but I would love to see anyone badger mary Cheney. What a coward. Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

I haven't watched Dave in way, way too long. He's on the same time as Family Guy re-runs. But I wonder about her, too. I mean, COME ON, Mary! Not that she could convince her dad one way or the other but ...

OK...I guess I've been in the closet...I didn't know Dick Cheney's daughter was gay.
Anyway, I love David Letterman. I must say, I always thought he was kind of biting and never kisses butt. That's what I like about him.

She's a politician's daughter. She has the ability to say absolutely nothing while yammering on and on. While her dad may have been unable to do anything, if it were me and I was in her shoes, I would have been beating on the gay rights drum as loud and as often as humanly possible. Until my dear daddy had to hog tie me or actually listen.

I miss Dave. Out here in the sticks they don't show him until 1 in the morning, and by then I am comatose. It's good to know he still has teeth..

Dude, it's not 7AM here, it's 10. LOL

Just had to point that out. :P

Dave is awesome, I haven't seen him in forever! I DVR everything though, I should start dvr'ing him. LOL Anyway, she pisses me off too. I saw her big interview on ... 20/20? I have no idea. Anyway, Diane Sawyer. And the girl had ZERO real answers about anything! I am amazed.

Then again, you are right, her Dad can't really do anything.

:)
